Commentary
And when He gave them glad tidings of what they have within themselves; He followed it with what they have against their enemies; so He said, 'The Most High': "And that"; meaning: and He gives glad tidings to the believers also that "those who do not believe"; meaning: no renewal of faith comes from them "in the Hereafter"; truly; or metaphorically; the reason for which is that they do not truly perform righteous deeds; due to their lack of direct engagement with them; or metaphorically by building them on a foundation other than faith; and He expressed with 'prepared' in mockery of them; so He said, 'The Most High': "We have prepared"; meaning: We have brought forth; and we have made ready what is of the utmost goodness, freshness, and suitability; as a promise that is true; which does not fail in any way; and it is nonetheless looked upon; due to our greatness; "for them"; from Us; through the believers; or without an intermediary; and when the enemies eagerly anticipated this promise, eagerly like the one who is delighted and happy; it came to them in its interpretation in a way that stole their hearts; in the manner of 'the greeting between them is a blow and a strike'; and it brought great joy to the hearts of the allies; so He said, 'The Most High': "a painful punishment"; for there is no glad tidings for those of high aspirations that is greater or more delightful than vengeance upon their opposers; thus the virtue of the Book over the Book is like the virtue of going over going; and He excluded the believers who do not perform righteous deeds to complete the glad tidings by indicating that they are among the few in this noble nation; to the extent that they are hardly found.
