Commentary
And when He promised; after He warned; He followed it with what clarifies that this does not pertain to a noble or a lowly person; rather it revolves around the description that He indicated in what has passed; with justice at one time; and with a covenant at another; and that is faith; so He said (the Most High) - in response to one who seemed to say: this is specific to one without another; encouraging the generality of the laws of Islam -: ﴿Whoever does a good deed﴾; and when it was general; and it might have specifically included males; He clarified the intended meaning of its generality; by His saying (the Most High): ﴿from a male or a female﴾; so He made it general; then He restricted it; indicating by the singular to the few of the firmly rooted; by His saying (the Most High): ﴿and he is a believer﴾.
And when a person rises in the degree of faith; he is worthy of trial; and testing; the Most High clarified that this does not contradict his happiness; and for this reason He emphasized His saying: ﴿So We will surely give him a good life﴾; to dispel what those who are led astray might think; regarding what hastens for them their pleasures in this worldly life; ﴿a good life﴾; meaning: in this world; by what We grant him of steadfastness; and purity of character; ﴿and We will surely reward them﴾; all of them; ﴿their reward﴾; in this world; and the Hereafter; ﴿with the best of what they used to do﴾; meaning: a natural state; ﴿they do﴾; the scholars said - may Allah be pleased with them -: the obedient one is in a pleasant life; if he is wealthy there is no issue with that; and if he is poor then with contentment; and satisfaction; with the ruling of the tranquil soul; and the wicked one conversely; if he is poor it is clear; and if he is wealthy then his greed does not allow him to enjoy; so he remains in a constricted life.
