And when it was made clear that lying, and what it leads to, is the ugliest of evils and the farthest of things from noble qualities, and that it is one of the greatest causes of discord, its matter was worthy of emphasis. He reiterated the prohibition against it in a more eloquent manner than before, with a clear prohibition, warning of the consequences that result from that. He said - expressing by means of fabrication, indicating that this is not done except with a severe treatment from the soul, because the sound nature strongly recoils from it -: "And do not make your oaths a means of deceit"; meaning: corruption, cunning, a disease, and a deception, "among yourselves"; meaning: within your minds and bodies; "so that a foot may slip"; meaning: that may be a cause for a foot to slip; it is in the utmost greatness due to its steadfastness; "after its stability"; from its center which it was in, whether in religion or in worldly matters; so there will be no stability for it, and it will fall from its rank. The slipping of the foot is what the Arabs say for anyone who falls into a predicament after safety. "And taste the evil"; along with that slip; "because of what you have hindered"; meaning: yourselves; and you prevented others with your oaths which you intended for corruption, to conceal the truth; "from the path of Allah"; meaning: the Most High King; this action will be renewed for you as long as you remain in this description; "and for you"; along with that; "is a great punishment"; fixed, not to be removed, if you die upon that.
