Commentary
And when this example was concluded, it was sufficient for the intended meaning; it was binding upon them to acknowledge that the idols are servants of Allah; in their saying: "Here I am, O Allah, here I am; You have no partner; except a partner that is Yours; You own him and what he possesses." And sometimes a denier might say: They are not His property; he followed it with another example; in which denial is not possible; so He, the Exalted, said: ﴿And Allah has struck﴾; meaning: He who has complete encompassing knowledge; ﴿an example﴾; then He replaced it with ﴿two men﴾; then He began to clarify what was summarized; so He, the Exalted, said: ﴿One of them is mute﴾; meaning: he was born mute; then he translated his muteness, which was intended to mean that he does not understand; nor does he make others understand; by saying: ﴿is not able to do anything﴾; meaning: at all; ﴿and he is a burden﴾; meaning: a weight; and a dependent; and the essence of it is the heaviness that prevents from penetration; "The knife has become dull"; when its blade thickens; so it does not cut; and "His tongue has become heavy"; when it does not move in speech; due to its thickness and the loss of its edge; this was said by al-Rummani; ﴿upon his master﴾; the one who is in charge of him; then He clarified that by saying: ﴿wherever he directs him﴾; meaning: sends him; and diverts him; that master; ﴿does not bring about any good﴾; and this is the example of their partners who are dependents; and a burden upon their worshippers. And when their misguidance was revealed in equating the rivals - who have no ability to do anything - with Allah; who has complete encompassing ability and knowledge over everything; it was fitting that all goodness be in reproaching them; and denying them; by His saying, the Exalted: ﴿Is he equal﴾; meaning: this mentioned one; ﴿and one﴾; meaning: and another man opposite in his attributes; for he is knowledgeable; perceptive; strong; expert; blessed in his affair; fortunate in his endeavors; ﴿commands﴾; with what he has of knowledge; and ability; ﴿with justice﴾; meaning: by giving advice to others; ﴿and he﴾; in himself; outwardly and inwardly; ﴿is on a path﴾; meaning: a clear and wide way; ﴿straight﴾; meaning: acting upon what he commands; and this is an example of the true deity; who suffices his worshipper of all burdens; and he indicates the perfection of His knowledge; and the completeness of His ability.
