Commentary

And when he refuted with this proof all that they established of doubts; and he struck examples regarding what they committed from their saying: 'The king cannot be reached except by assistants; from a doorkeeper; and a deputy; and the like; and he cannot be reached except by types of offerings; so they worshipped idols; and they did for them what is done for him; likening him - glorified is His status; and exalted is His dominion - because the difference is that the kings of this world, whom they measure against, only established those mentioned for their need; and the weakness of their kingship; and their dominion; so their condition is contrary to the description of one whom neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes; nor is he occupied by one affair from another; and everything is in His grasp; and under His control; and His greatness; for this reason, His saying (exalted is He) resulted: 'So do not strike for Allah' means: the One who has complete encompassing; 'the examples' means: so you liken Him; likening Him to others; and if He struck for you the examples; Abu Hayyan and others said: Ibn Abbas - may Allah be pleased with them - said: meaning: do not liken Him to His creation; it has ended. And as he said in 'Al-Kashaf' - it is a representation of associating partners with Allah; and the likening to Him; because whoever strikes examples is likening one state to another; and one story to another; it has ended; and this prohibition is general in every example; due to the seriousness of the matter; for fear that this example may not be appropriate to His magnitude; and it has been established that repelling evils is preferable to bringing about benefits; especially in this; because the error in it is disbelief; and the justification for the ruling is indicated by His saying (exalted is He): 'Indeed, Allah' means: the One who has all authority; and there is no authority for anyone else; 'knows' means: He has all the attributes of knowledge; so when He strikes an example, He perfects it with the encompassing of His knowledge; such that no one else can show a difference between the one being represented and that which is represented by it; in the matter represented; 'and you do not know' means: you have no knowledge at all; so for this reason, you are blinded from the sun; and what is not ambiguous has become ambiguous to you; and this station is high; and its path is difficult; and its traveler is in great danger.
