Commentary
And when He awakened them from their slumber; and alerted them to their great negligence; regarding the universality of power; and the comprehensiveness of knowledge; which necessitates action by choice; and confirms resurrection and other matters; of all that He wants - glorified and exalted is He - through some of His signs scattered in the horizons; from inanimate objects; then animals; and He concluded that with what is a cure; He reiterated some of what is in their souls as evidence for that; reminding them of the four stages of human life; which are the age of childhood and growth; then the age of youth; which, when it ends, leads to standing still; then the age of middle age; in which there is decline; with the strength remaining; then the age of decline with the appearance of weakness; which is old age; implying what no medicine can suffice for; urging them to reflect on His signs; and to contemplate them before the occurrence of that event; so that regret may not come too late; and they regret when regret is of no benefit; He said: "And Allah"; meaning: the One who encompasses everything with power and knowledge; "created you"; so He made you alive after being dead; understanding; adversaries; "then He takes you"; differing in ages; so the young cannot delay; nor the old can advance; among you are those who die at the height of their strength; "and among you are those who are returned"; meaning: with the easiest matter from us; they cannot oppose it in any way; "to the most decrepit age"; because he ages; and becomes like the state of childhood (p-206) in weakness; with others' disgust for him; and there is no hope after that; "so that he does not know"; and when the purpose of the surah is to indicate the completeness of power; and the comprehensiveness of knowledge; and the purity from any blemish of deficiency; and the context here is also for that; as evidenced by the conclusion of the verse; it removed the lowering to indicate the totality of ignorance for the time after knowledge; so it connects to death; and no medicine is beneficial in it; nor does any stratagem avail; He said: "after knowledge of something"; there is no healing in any of that when it occurs; nor does medicine prevent it: so hasten to reflect; and take heed; before the occurrence of either of these two; then He justified that by saying (Exalted is He): "Indeed, Allah"; meaning: the One who has complete encompassing; "is Knowing and Powerful"; meaning: profound in knowledge; encompassing in power; so whatever He wills; it is; and whatever another wills and He does not will it; His knowledge encompasses it; so He caused for it by His power what prevents it.
