Commentary
And when the matter of the bees was in the indication of the completeness of ability and the perfection of wisdom, it was more astonishing than what preceded and more precious. He mentioned it in threes and delayed it because it is the least of the three in their view. He changed the style and made it from His revelation, hinting at what is in it of strange matters and marvelous affairs. So He said (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿And your Lord inspired﴾; meaning: the One who is gracious to you, by placing honey in the vast, desolate wildernesses, which are extremely bitter, and other than that from the places, and with other benefits, indicating the action by choice and the completeness of ability; ﴿to the bees﴾; meaning: by inspiration. Al-Razi said in 'Al-Lawa'ih': So Allah (glorified and exalted is He) gave everything its creation and then guided. Some of it is by mere subjugation, like the inanimate objects, and some of it is by inspiration and subjugation, like the bees and the [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN:surfah] - meaning: with a dhamma and a sukoon; it is a small creature that makes a home from thin sticks, then enters it and dies - and the spider; and some of it is by subjugation, inspiration, and the intellect that agrees on one system, like the angels; and some of it is by all of that, thought, distinction, and the different actions based on thought, like humans.
And when there was in the inspiration a meaning of saying, He came with 'that' which clarifies; so He said (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿That you take﴾; meaning: do what the one who is pretentious does, from taking ﴿from the mountains houses﴾; what houses! How astonishing it is! ﴿And from the trees﴾; meaning: the ones suitable for that, in the meadows, the mountains, and the deserts; ﴿and from what they raise﴾; meaning: what people raise from roofs and walls and other than that. He began with the houses because they are among the wonders of time in the beauty of craftsmanship, the novelty of shape, the excellence of precision, and the completeness of proportion.
