Commentary
Then he turned to what is more precious to them; and closer to him in the mentioned meanings; and he said (the Most High) - commenting with "We will give you to drink" -: ﴿And from the fruits of the date palms and the grapes﴾; and since they had a role in taking from what was mentioned of it; unlike milk, which they have no part in at all; he ascribed the matter to them; and this is to indicate the dislike of intoxication; and to prepare for the prohibition of it in his saying - resuming -: ﴿You take﴾; meaning: by your own making; and treatment; and for the purpose of resuming this sentence, it was necessary for him to say: ﴿from it﴾; meaning: from its water; and he expressed intoxication [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN:sakar] by the source; to emphasize its ugliness; and he increased in the emphasis by expressing it with the heavier of the two sources; which is the active form; it is said: "He intoxicated [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN:sakar] with intoxication; and intoxication"; like "He guided [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN:rushd] with guidance; and guidance"; and "He bee [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN:nahl] with bee; and bee"; so he said (the Most High): ﴿intoxication﴾; meaning: that which is intoxicating; exhilarating; causing to forget the pathways of reason; ugly; not commendable for sustenance; ﴿and good sustenance﴾; which does not produce harm in body; nor in mind; from vinegar; and syrup; and others; and does not block any of the pathways; rather it may open them; like good lawful things; for it illuminates the heart; and expands the mind; and all substances open the blockages of the body; and this is as He granted us - glorified is He - the intellect which is the best of it; so some people used it correctly in monotheism; while others distorted it and defiled it with polytheism; Al-Rummani said: It was said: "Intoxication": what is prohibited from drink; and "good sustenance": what is permitted from it - from Ibn Abbas - may Allah be pleased with both of them -; and Sa'id ibn Jubair; and Ibrahim; and Al-Sha'bi; and Abu Razin; and Al-Hasan; and Mujahid; and Qatadah - may Allah be pleased with them -; and "intoxication"; in the language; has four aspects: the first: what intoxicates; the second: what is fed from food; the third: stillness; (the fourth): the source of intoxication; and its origin is the blockage of the pathways from what is thrown into them; and from it is "intoxication"; meaning with a break; then stillness; and whoever took intoxication as intoxication; said: It is abrogated by the verse of "the table"; and the expression of it by what understands the blockage of the pathways understands its dislike when it was permissible; and the verse is from the overlap: mentioning intoxication first indicates the opening secondly; and mentioning the good indicates the ugly first; so the verse is the clearest in the Qur'an regarding the Mu'tazila in that sustenance is applied to the prohibited; and for the closeness of the verses of the cattle; and the trees, He gathered them - glorified is He - and said (the Most High): ﴿Indeed, in that﴾; meaning: the great matter; of these benefits; ﴿is a sign﴾; and for the clarity of their matter in the completeness of the Creator's power; and His oneness; He said (the Most High): ﴿for a people who understand﴾.
