63By Allah, We sent (messengers) to communities before you, but the Satan made their deeds look good to them. So, he is their patron today, and for them there is a painful punishment.

Commentary

And when He made clear their outcome; and they were saying: Indeed, they have someone who will intercede for them; He made clear to them what will be their state; by comparing them to their counterparts; as a threat; and a consolation for the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him -; He said (the Exalted): "By Allah"; meaning: the Most High King; "Indeed, We have sent"; meaning: with what We have of greatness; messengers from those who have passed; "to nations"; and since sending is an action, it did not extend to the time before; He said: "before you"; just as We sent you to these; "then the devil adorned for them"; meaning: the one consumed with anger; the one cast out by curse; "their deeds"; just as he adorned for these; so they went astray as they went astray; and We destroyed them; "so he is"; no one else; "their ally today"; after their destruction while they are in the fire; and he has no ability to aid them; "and for them is a painful punishment"; so there is no ally for them; because if he had the ability to aid them, he would not have submitted them to destruction; and they have obeyed him; rather, if he had been deprived of his guardianship, that would have been better for them; so it is a denial that they have an ally; in the most eloquent of ways.
