Commentary
And when the darkness of the face and the suppression may not be accompanied by disgrace, he connected it with His saying (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿He hides﴾; meaning: he conceals; by placing it in a location as if it is behind; with no one having knowledge of it; ﴿from the people﴾; meaning: the men; those he is among; ﴿from the evil of what he has been given good tidings﴾; for he considers it disgraceful; then he clarified what follows him of confusion in thought at that time; with His saying (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿Does he hold it in humiliation﴾; meaning: in disgrace; and lowliness of matter; and when they would bury the female infant in the ground; not in the manner of burial; he expressed it by saying concealment; so He said (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿Or does he conceal it in the dust﴾; Ibn Maylaq said: The interpreters said: When a woman was overtaken by labor, she would dig a small pit; and sit on its edge; and if she gave birth to a male, she would show him; and happiness would appear on his family; and if she gave birth to a female, she would seek permission from her husband; if he wished, he would keep her in humiliation; and if he wished, he would command that she be thrown into the pit; and the dirt would be thrown upon her while she is alive; to die; it ended; they said: And the burying was among Mudar, and Khuzā'ah, and Tamīm.
And when their ruling in this matter was extreme in its ugliness; he described it with what it deserves; so he said - affirming its ugliness -: ﴿Indeed, evil is what they judge﴾; meaning: by making what they dislike for their Lord, from whom they have no blessing except from Him; and making what they choose for themselves specific to them.
