Commentary
And when He frightened them; it indicated the completeness of His power; over that and other than it; by His saying - adding to what He decrees: "Did they not see their inability regarding what they want; and His forcing them to what they do not want; so they may know by that His power and their inability; so they may know that His pardon for their sins is a kindness from Him to them; and a gentleness towards them" -: "Did they not"; and when their right was to hasten to repentance; and they did not do so; He turned away from them; in the reading of the group; as a warning, He said (the Exalted): "They see"; with the bottom 'ya'; and Hamzah and Al-Kisai read it with the address; in accordance with what preceded it; meaning: they look with the eyes of sight; reflecting with insights; and He clarified their distance from the divine knowledge with the letter of purpose; so He said (the Exalted): "to what Allah created"; meaning: to whom belongs all affairs; "of anything"; meaning: it has a shadow; "that retreats"; meaning: it returns to the direction of the person; "its shadows"; which is what the person has shielded from the sun; surpassing him; "from the right"; which is what is on the right of the one who is turning to the left; facing south; which is the direction of the Kaaba for those in the land of Sham; which is the dwelling of the prophets - peace be upon them -; and it was specified because the shadow is first when the sun rises straight to that direction; evenly; and He gathered in His saying: "and the left"; because the sun, whenever it rises, that shadow turns back to the direction behind the person; and it continues like that until it stands at sunset towards its left; aiming against what it was directed to at sunrise; so when it was after its standing towards the right seeking in its retreat the direction of the left; those directions in which it retreated were named by what it was seeking; as a reminder of that; and in it is an indication of the scarcity of the good that is straight; and the abundance of the deviant and bad.
And when the number of the submissive is a clear indication of the overpowering; and more awe-inspiring; He gathered; with regard to the meaning of "what"; in His saying: "prostrating"; meaning: while they are humbled "to Allah"; meaning: the Most High King; with what is in them of need for their Planner.
And when the extension of the shadow is forced, no one can separate from it; He said - gathering with the 'wa' and the 'noon'; emphasizing -: "and they are subdued"; in humiliation and smallness; nothing from them can resist His decree; and He specifically mentioned the shadow; for its rapid change; and change indicates the changer.
