Commentary
And when the messengers of kings are accompanied by what defines their truthfulness; he said - in response to one who seemed to ask: By what evidence were they sent? -: ﴿With clear signs﴾; which define their truthfulness; (p-168) ﴿and the scriptures﴾; meaning: the guiding books to the commands of their Sender.
And when the Qur'an is the greatest of evidences; he indicated this by mentioning it; as a sign of other miracles; with the conjunction 'and'; so he said - adding to what is implied: 'And thus We sent you with the manifest miracles' -: ﴿And We sent down﴾; meaning: by what We have of greatness; ﴿to you﴾; meaning: and you are the noblest of creation; ﴿the reminder﴾; meaning: the book that necessitates remembrance; elevating in rank; leading to the abodes of honor; ﴿to clarify for the people﴾; all of them; by what Allah has granted you of understanding; in which you surpassed all of creation; and the tongue which is the greatest of tongues; and the most eloquent; and Allah has elevated you in it to a rank that no one has reached; ﴿what was revealed﴾; meaning: the occurrence of its revelation ﴿to them﴾; from this legislation guiding to the happiness of both abodes; by clarifying the general and explaining what is ambiguous; from the knowledge of the foundations of religion; whose head is the oneness of Allah; and resurrection; and others; and it encompasses the explanation of the ancient books for their people; to guide them to what has been abrogated; and to what they have altered, so it was distorted.
And when the implication is: 'Perhaps they will act due to your good clarification'; he added to it - clarifying (p-169) the honor of knowledge - his saying (the Most High): ﴿And perhaps they will reflect﴾; if they look at its superior styles; and its high and exquisite meanings; they will reach through thought - because of what I have opened for them of the doors of clarification - to the states of the angels; that their spirits prevail over their bodies; so they will know that He (the Most High) is One; capable; acting by choice; and that He establishes people for recompense; so they obey Him out of desire and fear; thus they combine between the honors of obedience, to which the spirits are called; and refraining from disobedience, to which the souls are called through the bodies.
