Commentary
And when the decree was made - detailing for the two groups that were made clear to them; and encouraging migration; because it is after faith the strongest bond of Islam -: "So those who disbelieved (p-164) and were deceived by what they witnessed of the fleeting pleasures; We will certainly disgrace them in this world and the Hereafter; and We will surely reward them for all that they used to do"; he added to it His saying (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿And those who migrated﴾; meaning: they undertook migration; fleeing with their religion; so they left their fathers; and their sons; and their relatives; from the disbelievers; and their homes; and everything they were prohibited from; ﴿For the sake of Allah﴾; meaning: the Most High King; who has the attributes of perfection; after the disbelievers persisted in harming them; so they left their lands for them.
And when their migration did not take long due to the death of some of those they migrated from; and the Islam of others; after they endured their oppression as long as Allah willed; He said (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿After they were wronged﴾; meaning: their oppression occurred from the disbelievers; it was built for the action; because the danger is the occurrence of oppression; not its being from a specific person; ﴿We will surely settle them﴾; meaning: We will provide them with a dwelling; that is worthy of being returned to; with what We have of angels; and others from the soldiers; and all of the greatness; ﴿In this world﴾; as a place of refuge; ﴿Good﴾; great; immense; as a reward for them for our service; by exalting their matter; even if the polytheists dislike it; as one sees who contemplates; by preventing my allies; despite their fewness; and the matter will soon be revealed; a revelation (p-165) that no one will be ignorant of; for the verse is evidence for what came before it.
And when the decree was: "And We will surely settle them in the Hereafter with a great reward"; he added to it His saying (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿And the reward of the Hereafter﴾; prepared for them; ﴿is greater﴾; than what I have given them in this world; ﴿If they only knew﴾; meaning: if the disbelievers had - by their nature - knowledge; that they would have a mind to contemplate with; they would have known - by My kindness to My allies in this world; from My preventing them from them; in their obstinacy; with their multitude; and their fewness; and My bestowing My blessings upon them; especially in the places they migrated to from Abyssinia; and Medina; and others; with their striving to prevent it from them - that I gather for My allies the two abodes; and that My kindness to them in the Hereafter is greater; it has been narrated that Umar ibn al-Khattab - may Allah be pleased with him - when he gave a man from the emigrants a gift he would say: "Take; may Allah bless you in it; this is what Allah promised you in this world; and what He has stored for you in the Hereafter is greater and better"; then he recited this verse.
