Tafsir for verse: 16:35
35The polytheists said, “If Allah had so willed, we would have not worshipped anything other than Him - neither we nor our forefathers - nor would we have made anything unlawful without (a command from) Him.” Similar was the reaction of those who were before them. Therefore, the messengers’ obligation is no more than to convey the message clearly.

Commentary

And when what is astonishing from their words was completed; and their outcome; in the bad state of their affairs; and He concluded with their threat; He turned to His saying: "And when it is said to them, what has your Lord sent down?"; necessitating another threat; marveling at their state in it; He said: ﴿And those who associate others with Allah said﴾; meaning: the one firmly established among them in this description; and the one following him; in the manner of objection to whoever calls them to monotheism; from a Prophet; and others; arguing with predestination; out of stubbornness from them; and objecting to whoever is not questioned about what He does; by saying that He - due to His ability over all things - is not in need of sending messengers; so sending them is futile - glorified and exalted is Allah above their words; for it is the saying of one who seeks the reason in His rulings (glorified and exalted is He); and in His actions -; and it is a false statement; because He - glorified is He - is the doer of what He wills; whether He informs the servants of His wisdom; or not: ﴿If Allah had willed﴾; meaning: the Greatest King, encompassing all things in ability and knowledge; our worship of others; ﴿We did not worship﴾; and when all ranks are deficient compared to His rank; and they are varying; and what they worship from idols is at the lowest rank; they included the neighbor; and they said: ﴿besides Him﴾; and they delved into denial; and they said: ﴿of anything﴾; meaning: of the things; ﴿We and our forefathers﴾; before us; and when they mentioned the origin; they followed it with the branch and said: ﴿And we did not prohibit﴾; meaning: upon ourselves; ﴿besides Him﴾; meaning: besides His command; ﴿of anything﴾; because what He wills does not fail; according to your claim; but He did not will non-existence; for He willed the existence of what we are upon; so we follow what He willed; we do not change from it; because He does not will except what is true; and the wretched have gone astray - by their words this; the truth which they intended with falsehood - that the essence of happiness; and misery; is only in compliance with the command; not in compliance with the will; so whatever was of action; and abstaining; in accordance with the command; the doer of it is happy; and whatever opposed it, the proof stands against its doer; according to what is customary among people; so he is wretched.

So when the veil of this ambiguous statement was violated; and it was as if it was said - to distance it -: Did anyone else say it? It was said: Yes; ﴿Thus﴾; meaning: like this distant thing from guidance; and the saying that is outside of guidance; and righteousness; and it is the objection to their Lord in sending the messengers; preventing the permissibility of sending with this weak doubt; for He (glorified and exalted is He) wants to show the fruit of sovereignty by ruling; on what the servants are accustomed to; from establishing proof through voluntary actions; even if they are by His decree; because that is concealed from the servants; ﴿He acted﴾; meaning: he denied the evidence of the favor; ﴿Those﴾; and it indicated the absence of the engulfing of time by His saying: ﴿Before them﴾; and it was a denial; because their saying necessitated that what they are upon is what Allah is pleased with; and the messengers say: He is not pleased with it; and He only accepts what they were informed that its owner is rewarded for it; or not punished; so that was a reason for the denial against them by His saying: ﴿So is it﴾; meaning: So what; ﴿upon the messengers﴾; meaning: those who are not messengers in reality except for them; and they are those whom Allah sent to call the servants; succeeding from predecessors; and since the questioning (p-156) is in the meaning of negation - as has been mentioned -; yet it was depicted in its form; to be like the claim of something by its evidence; so He said: ﴿Except for the clear message﴾; and they have conveyed to you; and clarified for you; so the burden of disobedience has become specific to you.
