And when the attack on the Qur'an - due to their proven inability to oppose it - is a sign of arrogance; Allah, the Most High, said - connecting to His saying: "Their hearts are in denial" -: "And when it is said"; meaning: from any speaker it may be; at any time it may be; even if it is repeated; "to them"; meaning: to those who deny the Hereafter; "What"; meaning: what thing "has your Lord sent down?"; meaning: the One who is gracious to you; the One who manages your affairs; "They said"; denying its revelation; considering "that" as a relative pronoun; not as a confirmation for the question: that which you mean to say is revealed is not revealed; rather it is "the tales of the ancients"; along with their inability after His challenge to them to oppose a chapter of it; while they know that it is the most eloquent of people; and that it cannot be from anyone among people; whether from the past or the future; a saying except that they said it is more eloquent than it.
