Commentary
And when it was known that among the created beings are the dead and the living; and the dead are the furthest thing from the attribute of the Divine; He said - negating life from it; after He negated ability; and knowledge; which necessitates that its worshipers are more noble than it; which necessitates that they, by their submission to it, are in the utmost foolishness -: ﴿They are dead﴾; and when the description may be applied to something other than what it is associated with; metaphorically due to its lack of benefit by its opposite; even if it exists within it; deeply rooted in it; He said: ﴿Not alive﴾; clarifying that what is meant by this is the reality of negating life; contrary to what Allah - ﴿Indeed, to Him belongs creation﴾ [Al-A'raf: 54] - has regarding being alive, never dying; and perhaps He limited His description of them - despite them being dead - to saying that they are dead; because that, while being sufficient for the intended purpose of the context - which is distancing them from Divinity - is applicable to every created being in which Divinity is claimed; even if it possesses life; because its life is transient, followed by death; and whoever is like that is far from the attribute of Divinity.
And when they - while knowing that the idols are stones that have no life - are addressed from within them by the tongues of the devils - as is mentioned in the biographies; and other books compiled on the whispers of the jinn; they began to think that they had knowledge in this regard; and for this reason, they believed that they could harm; and benefit; it was necessary to negate knowledge from them; and when they were informed through their tongues of some of what they eavesdrop from hearing; (p-133) it would be as they informed; it did not negate from them absolute knowledge; rather, it negated what no one has knowledge of except Allah; because they do not inform about it with any news except that its falsehood becomes evident; so Allah (the Exalted) said - counting resurrection as a matter agreed upon -: ﴿And they do not perceive﴾; meaning: in this state; as indicated by 'what'; ﴿When﴾; meaning: at what time; ﴿They will be resurrected﴾; thus He negated from them absolute perception; which is more general than knowledge; so everything that is more specific than it is negated.
