Commentary

And when it was established that He is free from every deficiency: polytheism and otherwise; He began to describe Himself - glorified and exalted is He - with the attributes of perfection; from the command; and the creation; and since the command is more ancient; and higher; He began with it; and since among His commands is the sending down of the angels in the form they (p-104) requested in their saying: ﴿Why do you not bring us the angels?﴾ [Al-Hijr: 7]; and He narrated to them in the Surah of Ibrahim and Lut - peace be upon them - what results from their descent together; and it was understood from it that they have another state in their descent; which the messengers do not deny; and it is the state of coming to them with knowledge; which is to the souls as the souls are to the bodies; and this perhaps raised for them an objection by which they sought to distinguish between themselves and the messengers in their descent upon them; and not upon them - as previously mentioned in 'Al-Hijr' -; and what they associate with Him has no influence at all; whether by sending down or otherwise; Allah - the Exalted - said, indicating that; and that the revelation is through the angel; and that prophethood is a gift; not something earned -: ﴿He sends down the angels﴾; those who are the highest assembly; ﴿with the Spirit﴾; meaning: the greatest meaning; which is to the souls as the souls are to the bodies; ﴿from His command﴾; which is His speech that includes command; and prohibition; ﴿Indeed, to Him belongs creation and command﴾ [Al-A'raf: 54]; and it is that by which He is distinguished; for its truthfulness; and its miraculous nature over all of creation; so how about what does not comprehend from it; like idols? (p-105) ﴿Upon whom He wills of His servants﴾; without distinction; because that is the result of His action by choice; and He replaced 'the Spirit'; or interpreted the sending down as revelation; because it includes the meaning of the saying; and He said: ﴿That you warn﴾; meaning: the people of My might; for it is surely descending upon whom I intend to send it; because of ﴿That there is no deity except Me﴾; and He expressed with the pronoun of the speaker; because it is more indicative of the intended meaning; for He is more knowledgeable; and it caused from His oneness; which is the ultimate perfection of scientific power; His saying - commanding what is the utmost perfection of practical power -: ﴿So fear Me﴾; meaning: let your fear of Me be intense; and your taking what will be a protection for you from My punishment; for there is no deterrent from what I intend; so whoever I know to be deserving of punishment, I send it upon him; and whoever I know to be deserving of receiving the Spirit, I grant it to him.
