Commentary

And when he mentioned the descending depths; the controlling ones for the seas; he followed them with the strong stakes; which are like pegs; reminding of what is in them of blessings; he said: ﴿And He cast into the earth﴾; meaning: He placed in it a placement; as if He threw it into it with a throw; mountains; ﴿firmly set﴾; touching it; and adorning its sides; to prevent it from ﴿swaying﴾; meaning: swaying unsteadily to the right and left; meaning: so that you may experience swaying; which is a dizziness that afflicts the one riding the sea; ﴿with you﴾; so it is stable for that reason of the casting; stable despite its necessity for the spherical movement.

And when he mentioned the stakes; and followed them with the pegs; he followed it with what bursts forth from it frequently; adding to "firmly set"; for what the doer includes of the meaning of "made"; he said: ﴿and rivers﴾; and the most evident evidence for the stability of the earth is what preceded it from the mention of the seas; and what followed it from the talk about the rivers; for if it were to move; even by the measure of a hair each day; the seas would have drowned those beside the lowering; and the courses of the rivers would have reversed; (p-127) thus their benefits would have returned as the greatest harms; and if the seas increased; by what the rivers pour into them; over the course of the night; and the running of the day; the earth would have drowned; but He (the Exalted) arranged the matter with His wisdom, a planning that the thoughts of the wise cannot comprehend; by having the heat of the sun dominate the earth during all the duration of summer; and some of the other seasons; so it flowed into its depths; and heated in its depths in winter; thus it warmed the waters of the seas and others; and vapors rose from them; as steam rises from a boiling pot; to the extent that the rivers poured into it; and those vapors condensed in the air into water when they cooled; then rain descended from them; and it revived the earth after its death; and what Allah willed penetrated its depths; thus He extended the rivers; and for that reason they increase with the increase of rain; and decrease with its decrease; and so it is every year; thus this necessitated the sea remaining in its state; without increase; so glorified is the Planner, the Wise, the Mighty, the All-Knowing; and when he mentioned that; he followed it with what can be reached for the benefits of each of them; he said (the Exalted): ﴿and paths﴾.

And when the mountains; and the seas; and the rivers are signs for the tangible and the intangible paths; He said (the Exalted): ﴿that perhaps you may be guided﴾; meaning: guidance occurs; so that you may be guided to your objectives.
