Commentary
And when it indicated His power and choice - glorified and exalted is He - as a sign of the ability over all that He has informed of; especially the Hour; by creating the heavens and the earth; which is greater than the creation of mankind; then He mentioned some of what is revealed from the earth; surrounded by air; from the differences indicating the uniqueness of the Creator; and His choice; and He concluded it with color; He followed that with the submerged [areas] in water; which has no color in reality; indicating that it contains - among the benefits and animals; which have varying amounts; qualities; shapes; and wonderful colors - what is more indicative than that; so He said: "And He is"; meaning: no one else; "the One who has made the sea subservient"; meaning: He has made it easy and prepared it for the living beings within it; and the formation of jewels; and other benefits; and what is meant by it are the seven seas located in the elevated quarter above the water; which is the inhabited part of the earth; the material from the encompassing ocean covering three-quarters of the earth; so He made it subservient; in such a way that people can benefit from it; by riding; diving; and other means; "that you may eat from it"; meaning: by fishing; and others; from the flesh of fish; "fresh meat"; you will not find any more tender than it; nor softer; and it is the moistest of meats; so corruption quickly approaches it; and it is hastened to be eaten fresh and delicious; along with its being in salty brine; "and you extract from it"; meaning: with your effort in diving; and what follows it; "ornaments that you wear"; meaning: your women; and they are some of you for you; so it is as if the wearer is you; and it is from the stones that you cannot find anything harder than it; nor purer; than pearls; and likewise from coral; and others; with respect to this hardness; and that softness; to the water; if it were an active agent by its nature, they would be equal.
And when He mentioned the general benefits; addressing them with it; and the "makhru" - which is for the ship to sail against the wind; so it cuts through the water; and the sound of its movement is heard, which is amazing; and that is with a heavy load - is a great sign; no one reflects upon it except the possessors of hearts; He specifically addressed the highest of those with understanding; and those who approach him in seeking the truth; so He said: "And you see the ships"; and when the observation of the abundance of blessings here is more complete than in Surah 'Fatir'; He preceded the "makhra" in His saying: "mawakhir in it"; meaning: ships that cut through the water with a sound; for you to ride them; so you may infer - from their not sinking in it; with its fluidity; and its delicateness; and the intensity of its lightness - the oneness of the deity; and His power.
And when he explained the subjugation by the benefit of the sea itself; from food and what follows it; he turned to that benefit by it; and said (exalted is He): ﴿And that you may seek﴾; meaning: you seek a great seeking by riding it; ﴿from His bounty﴾; meaning: Allah; by reaching through it to the vast lands for trade and others; ﴿and perhaps you may give thanks﴾; for these blessings which you are incapable of without His subjugation; and 'the mahrūq': the splitting of the water to the right and left; and it is also the sound of the wind blowing; when its blowing becomes strong; and it has begun with what dives at times; and rises at other times by choice; and it has been repeated with what is of its nature the sinking; and it has been repeated with what is of its nature the floating.
