Commentary
And when he clarified the matter of the call; and explained its ways; and presented the matter of migration; and coercion in religion; and the trials in it; indicating what caused that from the tribulations; and the afflictions from the disbelievers; unjustly; and he concluded that with the command to be gentle with them; after he specifically addressed it - blessings and peace be upon him - with the command to be gentle; with the command to his followers to act justly; and to do good; as has been mentioned; even if with the fiercest of enemies; and the prohibition against retaliating against them except in a manner of justice; so He said (the Exalted): "And if you retaliate"; meaning: you have a consequence against them; in which you can take revenge on them; "then retaliate with that which is" (p-282) And when the matter was general in every action; of retaliation from any doer it may be; there was no concern with specifying the doer; He built for the acted upon His saying (the Exalted): "You were retaliated against with it"; and in that is an indication - as is customary with kings in their speech - to their dominance over them; and their submission to him; and making it with a tool of doubt establishing between fear; and hope.
And when He permitted them the degree of justice; He elevated them to the rank of goodness; with His saying (the Exalted): "And if you are patient"; by pardoning them; "it is"; meaning: patience; "better for those who are patient"; and He manifested in the place of the implicit; a generalization; and a connection to the description.
