And when he called them to the noble morals; and forbade them from its evils; by accepting whoever approached him; even if his crime was great; in response to the call of their father Ibrahim - blessings and peace be upon him - in his saying: "So whoever follows me, indeed he is of me; and whoever disobeys me, indeed You are Forgiving and Merciful" [Ibrahim: 36]; he followed that with his mention; encouraging them to follow him in monotheism; and to incline towards the command; and the prohibition; with boldness; and hesitation; whether they were among those who follow the truth; or imitate their forefathers; he said - as a justification for what preceded -: "Indeed, Ibrahim"; meaning: your greatest father; the leader of the monotheists; "was a nation"; in him are worldly and otherworldly benefits; which necessitate that everyone who can benefit from him should follow and seek him; "devout"; meaning: sincere; "to Allah"; meaning: the King to whom belongs all command; in it is nothing of desire; "inclining"; inclined towards the command; and the prohibition; by abrogation or otherwise; so be you upright; followers of the truth; due to the evidence that he stood upon; and following the example of your greatest forefather.
And when the context was to establish the perfection of Ibrahim - blessings and peace be upon him -; and the affirmative attributes were close in source; quickly understood; and after it came a negative description in general; he omitted the noon from "yakun"; for brevity; and to facilitate understanding; easing it for him; and preserving it from going before its completion to something other than intended; and informing that the action is negated from him - blessings and peace be upon him - in the most eloquent forms of negation; nothing of it is attributed to him; even if little; it was said: "And he was not"; and when they were polytheists; they and many of their ancestors; he condemned that upon them; by stating that the greatest one they believe in his greatness from their forefathers is not of that kind; so He said (the Exalted): "of the polytheists"; those who stand with desire; so do not be among them;
