Commentary
And when some of the misguided might say: 'These things are dependent on the influence of the celestial bodies'; it was pointed out that they are not suitable for that, because they are changing. Therefore, there must be a dominant force that has affected the change in them. The matter continues like this until it reaches one, who is ancient, acting by choice, due to the established invalidity of the infinite regress. So He (the Exalted) said: ﴿And He has subjected to you﴾; meaning: O people, for the improvement of your conditions; ﴿the night﴾; for dwelling; ﴿and the day﴾; for seeking. Then He mentioned the verse of the day; and He (the Exalted) said: ﴿and the sun﴾; meaning: for benefits that He has specifically assigned to it. Then He mentioned the verse of the night; and He said: ﴿and the moon﴾; for matters that He has attached to it; ﴿and the stars﴾; meaning: for signs that He has established for them. Then He pointed out their change by His saying: ﴿subdued﴾; meaning: by types of change for what He created them for, in conditions that He has arranged; ﴿by His command﴾; as a means for your well-being and the well-being of that by which you are sustained; as a sign of His oneness and His action by choice; and if He had willed, He could have established other means or sufficed without means.
And when its matter - despite being tangible - does not contain any immediate benefits that are easy to grasp, which distract from thinking about it; He did not leave its matter to anything other than pure intellect; indicating its clarity. And although it must involve the use of the thinking power; because the lofty effects are more indicative of the magnificent ability and are clearer testimony to the grandeur and greatness. So He said: ﴿Indeed, in that﴾; meaning: the great subjugation; ﴿are signs﴾; meaning: many, numerous, great; ﴿for a people who reflect﴾; and He gathered the signs to show their multitude by detailing the mention of them.
