Commentary
And when He clarified this worldly blessing, He turned to a blessing that is much greater than it, in order to attract every oppressor. He clarified its greatness with the word of delay, so He said (glorified and exalted is He): "Then indeed your Lord"; meaning: the One who does good to you; "for those who committed evil"; and it is everything that is of the nature of being bad; it is what should not be done; "in ignorance"; as you have done; even if their deed was great and their ignorance was excessive; "then they repented"; and when He - glorified and exalted is He - accepts a little of the deed, He included the exception; so He said (glorified and exalted is He): "after that"; meaning: the sin; and even if it was great; they limited themselves to what their Creator permitted; "and they corrected themselves"; by continuing in that; "Indeed your Lord"; meaning: the One who does good to you by facilitating your religion; and making it easy; and when it is only after repentance that He forgives what is besides the shirk that occurs after it, He included the exception; so He said (glorified and exalted is He): "after it"; meaning: the repentance; and what preceded it from the evil deeds; "is surely Forgiving"; meaning: He is profound in concealing what they have done of evil; "Merciful"; meaning: He is generous with honor, favor, and blessing.
