Commentary
And when He made clear to them His blessing by His expansion upon them; by what they restricted upon themselves; He made clear to them another blessing; by distinguishing them over the Children of Israel; so He said (glorified and exalted is He): "And upon those who became Jews"; meaning: the Jews; "We prohibited"; meaning: by Our greatness; punishment for them; for their aggression; and their lying against their Lord; "What We have narrated"; meaning: by what We have of greatness; which was narrated with it as a miracle; "upon you."
And when the narration of that was not extensive in the time before him - blessings and peace be upon him and his family - He included the neighbor; so He said: "Previously"; meaning: in 'Al-An'am'; "And We did not wrong them"; meaning: those who fell into wrongdoing; by prohibiting upon them what We prohibited; "But they were"; meaning: always; a nature for them; and a continuous character; "themselves"; meaning: specifically; "they wronged"; meaning: by oppression; and disbelief; so We restricted upon them dealings with justice; and We dealt with you - where you wronged - with favor; so be grateful for the blessing; and beware of the evils of retribution.
