Commentary
And when he presented the tempter and the tempted, he followed that with a mention of their ruling according to the two recitations. He said (glorified and exalted is He) - with a word indicating delay; pointing to the lesser rank of both of them compared to the rank of one who did not do that -: ﴿Then indeed your Lord﴾; meaning: the One who is good to you by pardoning your nation; and lightening the burdens upon them in accepting the repentance of one who has apostatized with his tongue or heart; ﴿for those who emigrated﴾; the people of disbelief; by fleeing from their lands; repenting to Allah (glorified and exalted is He) from what they were in.
And when He - glorified is He - accepts a little of the action at any time; He indicated that with the preposition; He said (glorified and exalted is He) - clarifying that the trial by harm - even if it is severe - does not undermine the emigration; and what follows it; so this implies that in emigration without it is more appropriate; ﴿after they were tried﴾; in the passive form - according to the recitation of the majority - because the harmful thing is the trial absolutely; and for the active form - according to the recitation of Ibn 'Amir - meaning: they wronged; by having tried those who believed in Allah when they were disbelievers; or they gave the trial from themselves; so they tried it by obeying in the word of disbelief; or by returning with those who brought them back to the land of disbelief after emigration; after their faith; ﴿then they strove﴾; meaning: they engaged in the struggle against the disbelievers; with the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - repenting to Allah (glorified and exalted is He); ﴿and they were patient﴾; upon that; until they died upon it; ﴿indeed your Lord﴾; meaning: the One who is good to you by making those who have these qualities submissive to you.
And when it is for Him - glorified is He - to forgive all sins; except for shirk; and to punish for all of them; and for some of them; and to accept all good deeds; and to reject some of them; He indicated that with the preposition; He said (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿after it﴾; meaning: these good deeds; occurring after that corrupt one; which is the trial; ﴿is surely Forgiving﴾; meaning: He is capable of erasing sins; ﴿and Merciful﴾; meaning: He is capable of honoring, for He forgives them; and has mercy upon them.
