Commentary
And when the trees were general, Allah, glorified and exalted is He, began to distinguish them by varying the blessings and reminding of the differences. This indicates that the action is by choice. So He said, beginning with what is most beneficial in sustenance, nourishment, and enjoyment: ﴿It grows﴾; meaning: He, glorified and exalted is He, ﴿for you﴾; meaning: specifically; ﴿with it﴾; while being one in one land; ﴿the crops﴾; which you see; of the least trees in duration and the smallest in size; ﴿and the olive﴾; which you see; of the longest-lived trees and the greatest in stature.
And when the benefits were many in the date palm, He named it by its name; so He said, (the Most High): ﴿And the date palms﴾; and when the benefit in the vineyard without its fruit is trivial, He said, (the Most High): ﴿And the grapes﴾; and they are among the middle of that; ﴿and of all fruits﴾; and as for all of them, they will only be in Paradise; and what is on earth is a part of that whole; reminding of it and enticing to it; ﴿Indeed, in that﴾; meaning: the great water; which is mentioned; and about its branches; or in its descent in the mentioned manner; ﴿is a clear sign﴾; indicating that the doer of that is complete in ability; He can bring it back, just as He was able to begin; and that He is chosen; He does that at the time He wants.
And when that is something that can be sensed; and the engagement of the senses with its benefit - due to its proximity and ease of interaction - perhaps it distracts from thinking about the intended meaning; so being attentive to its indication requires extra contemplation and keen insight. He said (the Most High): ﴿For a people who reflect﴾; meaning: in that its unity and the multitude of what branches from it is a sign of the unity of its Creator and His action by choice; and He singled out the verse for the unity of what is mentioned; which is the water - as He said (the Most High) - in the verse: ﴿It is watered with one water﴾ [Ar-Ra'd: 4]; and there will come in the verse of the bee the words of Imam Abu al-Hasan al-Harali regarding this.
And Imam Abu Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr said: This surah in its connection with the surah "Al-Hijr" is like "Al-Hijr" with the surah "Ibrahim"; there is no difference. When He, the Most High, said: "So by your Lord, We will surely question them all" [Al-Hijr: 92] "about what they used to do" [Al-Hijr: 93]; and He, the Most High, said - after that regarding the warning to the mockers -: "So they will surely know" [Al-Hijr: 96]; He followed this with a clarification of the hastening of the matter; He, the Most High, said: "The command of Allah has come, so do not hasten it" [An-Nahl: 1]; and this was further clarified by His saying: "Glorified and exalted is He above what they associate" [An-Nahl: 1]; so He, glorified is He, declared Himself free from what they uttered in their mockery; and their associating partners with Him; and their great falsehood; and He followed that with glorification and exaltation; He, the Most High, said: "He created the heavens and the earth in truth, glorified and exalted is He above what they associate" [An-Nahl: 3]; then He followed that with mentioning the beginning of the creation of man; and the weakness of his nature; "He created man from a sperm drop" [An-Nahl: 4]; then He, the Most High, conveyed to him a limit in which there is dispute and argument; all of that is a test from Him; and a trial; to distinguish the vile from the good; and He followed this with mentioning some of His kindness in creating the animals; and what He made in them of various benefits; and what is upon Him, glorified is He, of compassion; and mercy; by which He delayed the punishment from those deserving it; and guided those who did not deserve guidance by themselves; rather, every guidance is by the compassion of the Creator; and His mercy; then He followed what He mentioned after that; of the creation of horses; and mules; and donkeys; and what is in all of that; with His saying: "And if He willed, He would have guided you all" [An-Nahl: 9]; so He clarified that all that occurs; of guidance and misguidance; is His creation and action; and that He created all from one; and began them with a single beginning; "He created man from a sperm drop" [An-Nahl: 4]; so there is no distance in the difference of their goals after that; for He, glorified is He, has shown us an example of this action; and its like; in His saying: "He is the One who sent down from the heavens water for you, from it is drink and from it is trees" [An-Nahl: 10]; until His saying: "a sign for a people who reflect"; it has ended.
