Commentary

And when it is that one who returns to the darkness after having emerged from it into the light is worthy of amazement; it is as if it were said: Why do they act? Or: Why does He do that to them? So He (the Exalted) said: ﴿That﴾; the apostasy; or the great warning; ﴿because they﴾; that is: due to the fact that they; ﴿preferred﴾; that is: they loved with a great love; ﴿the worldly life﴾; that is: the lowly, present, fleeting life; so they preferred it ﴿over the Hereafter﴾; the everlasting, splendid one; because they saw what the believer has of hardship; and the disbeliever has of ease; "and" because "Allah"; that is: the King who has the greatest wealth; ﴿does not guide the disbelieving people﴾; those whom He knows will persist in it; rather, He forsakes them; and He causes the devil to prevail over them; he deceives them away from their religion.
