Commentary
So when their disgrace became evident by this, it was as if it was said: 'Indeed, it is astonishing their boldness in committing such a disgrace; while they claim purity.' So He responded with His saying (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿Indeed, those who do not believe﴾; meaning: they believe every belief; acknowledging ﴿the signs of Allah﴾; meaning: He who has all greatness; ﴿Allah does not guide them﴾; meaning: the Most High King; who has absolute richness; rather, He leads them astray from the truth; therefore, they come forth with such superstitions; so give glad tidings to whoever persists in stubbornness; by closing the door of understanding and guidance.
And when it was possible that it might be imagined that since He is the misleader, the blame is not directed at them; He negated that with His saying: ﴿And for them is a painful punishment﴾; meaning: by that; for their direct engagement with it; while the intended meaning is concealed from them; and the creation of ability for them; as a result of the habits of some of the creation with others.
