Commentary
Then he turned to this measure - which the speech indicated - what was produced by the devil's dominance over them; he said (glorified and exalted is He): "And when We replace"; meaning: by Our greatness; by abrogation; "a verse"; easy; like the waiting period of four months and ten days; and the fighting of one of the Muslims against two of the disbelievers; or difficult like the prohibition of wine; and the obligation of five prayers; so We made it; (p-254) "in place of a verse"; difficult; like the waiting period of a year; and the endurance of ten of the disbelievers; or easy; like the verses that include the permissibility of wine; and the obligation of two rak'ahs at the beginning of the day; and two rak'ahs at its end; so the second was in place of the first; and instead of it; or the meaning could be: We abrogated a difficult verse and made in its place an easy verse; and the replacement is: the removal of something; with the placement of another in its place; "And Allah"; meaning: the One who has comprehensive knowledge; "knows best what He reveals"; of the benefits; according to the times; and the conditions; by abrogation; or otherwise; "They said"; meaning: the disbelievers; "Indeed, you"; meaning: O Muhammad; "are an inventor"; meaning: for you command today something; and tomorrow you prohibit it and command its opposite; and the matter is not as they said; "Rather, most of them"; and they are those who persist in disbelief; "do not know"; meaning: they do not have renewed knowledge; rather they are in the count of the animals; for their lack of benefit from what Allah has granted them of intellect; due to their immersion in following the devil; until their feet slipped in this clear matter after establishing the proof by the miracle; upon the fact that everything miraculous was from Allah; whether it was abrogating; or abrogated; or not; so the knowledge that this is the Qur'an; and this is not the Qur'an; by presenting it to this proof; is among the clearest matters and easiest to grasp; for whoever wanted that from them; or from others; from the knights of eloquence;
