Commentary

Then he connected with that what he understood from that he has authority over others. So Allah, the Exalted, said: "Indeed, his authority is only over those who befriend him." That is, the one by which he is able to have full control, by Allah's enabling for him, over those who befriend him. That is, they befriend him and persist in that by renewing their allegiance to him at all times. And those who are, that is, in their outward appearances and their inner selves, with him, that is, with the devil, are always associating partners. Because when they follow his whispers and obey his commands, they have worshipped him, thus making him a partner. They do not contemplate the subtleties of the Qur'an, nor do they understand its apparent meanings as they are, due to what the devil has blinded them with from his whispers. And he has confined them from these methods with his traps. They continue to attack it with blind hearts and foul tongues.
