Commentary
And when what has passed is sufficient to clarify that He is the One, the Chosen; He began to explain that in detail through the verses, providing clarity that leaves it in the most complete disclosure in a context enumerating the blessings; reminding of them; calling to gratitude for them; so He said - after indicating this; from the human being; and what is next to it in nobility from the animal; beginning with what is next to them in nobility from the plants; which are the sustenance of human life; and what sustains his life from the animals -: ﴿He is﴾; none other than Him in whom divinity is claimed; ﴿Who sent down﴾; meaning: by His wondrous power; ﴿from the sky﴾; it was said: its essence; and it was said: its direction; and it was said: the clouds - as is observed -; ﴿water﴾; meaning: one that you perceive by taste; and sight; ﴿for you from it﴾; meaning: specifically; ﴿a drink﴾; apparent on the surface of the earth; from the springs; and the rivers; and the pools; and others. And when the first thing that establishes the human being is the drink of milk that arises from water; He presented it; then followed it with what arises from it of his most noble foods; which is animal-based; so He said (the Exalted): ﴿And from it are trees﴾; for its flow in the one earth; and its mixing with it; so from that vegetation is formed; ﴿in which you graze﴾; meaning: you pasture; in a general sense; night and day; what He created for you of livestock; and the trees here - as understood by the scholars - are general for what remains in winter truly; and for others metaphorically; Al-Qazzaz said: "the tree": what remains with a trunk in winter until summer; then it leaves; and "the herb": what does not remain with a trunk; Al-Khalil said: "the bulk of the tree": its large parts; and what remains of it in winter; and "its small parts": two types; one of them remains with a root in the ground in winter; and grows in spring; and some of it grows from the ground as the herb grows; and the difference between it and the herb is that the tree remains with a root in winter; and the herb does not remain; and from Abu Hanifah - may Allah be pleased with him - that plants are of three categories: trees; which remain in winter; and neither its branch nor its root perish; and what grew from a seed; and did not grow from a stable root; is the herb; and what grew from a root - meaning: a base - and was among what perishes its branch and its root in winter; is the shrub; because it is different from the tree which remains its branch and its root; and "the herb": that which perishes its branch and its root; so it was a shrub between them.
