Commentary

﴿So declare﴾; (p-91); that is: proclaim with highness and strength; distinguishing between truth and falsehood; because of that; ﴿by what you are commanded﴾; with it from the Qur'an; and a clear Book; ﴿And turn away﴾; that is: turning away of one who does not care; ﴿from the polytheists﴾; with a beautiful turning away from harm; and striving in الدعاء; and it supports that his saying: "as"; refers back to the story of صالح; and is related to it - even though I have not seen anyone before me mention the description by which the two verses are related; which is division; then the description of the dividers as those who made the Qur'an into fragments; so that it is not thought that they are those who divided in the night of صالح; that is: We gave those the verses necessitating faith, so all they had was denial and division; just as We sent down to these the verses; so all they had was that; and he expressed in those with "We gave them"; because their verses are the she-camel; and her offspring; and the well; and it is given; tangible; not a revealed concept; and he said in these: "We sent down"; indicating the Qur'an which is the greatest of the verses; or to all; and he emphasized the Qur'an; because it is the greatest of them; and that they are false in their denial of it; and that it is not appropriate for them to be affected by any kind of doubt that it is revealed; because it is greater than those verses; while they are tangible; and as for the objection between them of the verses, it is from the greatest arts of eloquence; for when he completed the story of صالح - peace be upon him -; he knew that the obstinate might say: Why does He create them then destroy them; while He knows their refusal to respond? So he replied to them that He did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them; from these obstinate; and from their actions; and their punishment; and others; except with truth; and that the Hour is surely coming; so all who doubt it now will know that all of this is by sight; and that is when the veil is lifted from the insights; and the sights; so turn away from them; for it is inevitable that you will take your right; if not in this world then on the Day of Gathering; then he confirmed the action with wisdom by saying: ﴿Indeed, your Lord is the Creator, the All-Knowing;﴾ [Al-Hijr: 86] then he comforted him about what they constrict his chest with from the denial of the Hour; and that the promise of it is merely magic; and similar sayings; and from their boasting of their wealth; and their attributing it to the need to walk in the markets; by what He has given him from the treasures of the Qur'an; and commanded him to increase in humility; and gentleness towards the believers; so that their souls may be pleased; so they do not grieve over what has passed them of the world; and to warn everyone; and to caution them from the might of Allah; like what He sent down upon the ancients; then he returned to them; and likened them to these in denial; to make it known that they are more deserving of punishment; because they are likened to them; and the one likened is higher than the one being likened; and that is because they are more severe in disbelief; because their Prophet is greater; and his verses are more glorious and numerous; and clearer and more dazzling; so that will be (p-93) a reason for their heightened caution; and you may say - and perhaps it is better -: that when He mentioned that Thamud inhabited the land as the inhabitants of safety.

So a cry startled them from it, taking their souls; and it turned their bodies; just as it will be for all the people of the earth at the blowing of the trumpet; when the decree is enforced; and much has been mentioned of the signs and lessons in the heavens and the earth; by His saying, glorified and exalted is He: "And We have certainly made in the heaven constellations" [Al-Hijr: 16]; and what follows that from the jinn; and mankind; and others; of what has been mentioned as evidence of the Hour; it follows that the reason for the creation of all that and what it contains from the two horizons; is indeed the Hour; so He said: "And We did not create the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them except in truth" [Al-Hijr: 85]; meaning: with a firm command; not with deception and magic; as you witness; or due to the establishment of truth and its clarification from falsehood in a way that there is no doubt about it; on the Day of the Greatest Gathering; and from the establishment of truth is the enjoyment of the obedient and the punishment of the disobedient; and that is after the coming of the Hour with the two blasts of the trumpet; and indeed the Hour is coming with truth as well; and it is not magic as you think; and when its coming for this purpose is something that heals the heart; for the realization of vengeance; and it is a truth that must happen; it resulted in His saying, glorified and exalted is He: "So overlook with a good overlooking." (p-94) And when the soul is most trustworthy with the news of the All-Knowing; and the creator of a thing knows it better than others; how about when He is also fully knowledgeable? Allah, glorified and exalted is He, said - explaining that -: Indeed, your Lord; meaning: the one who is gracious to you; and He is the Creator; meaning: the one with complete power over existence and non-existence; the one who acts accordingly; the All-Knowing; the one whose knowledge reaches its peak; and when He concluded with these two attributes after mentioning what was given to the people of Al-Hijr from the signs; and that He created existence with truth; not with deception; and that was a reason for expecting the news of what this noble Prophet was given from them; to guide his nation; and the signs are either from the category of creation; like the sign of Salih; or from the category of the command which is the essence of knowledge; He indicated to his preference, blessings and peace be upon him, with the virtue of his sign; so He said - adding to that -: And We have certainly given you; meaning: if we had given Salih or others a sign that has passed; then nothing remains except its mention; indeed, We have given you seven of the repeated verses; which is Al-Fatiha; which you have been specifically honored with; it repeats in it the Bismillah for the beginnings; and the Hamdalah for the perfections; and the Most Gracious and the Most Merciful in it for the initial creation; and the pleasing deeds; and the dominion of this world called Lordship; for it being concealed; and the dominion of the Day of Judgment; and between them is the Most Gracious of the second creation in the Hereafter; and the Most Merciful of the reward for the pleasing deeds; (p-95) and the worship that cannot be except with power and choice; and the seeking help that looks to the inability to achieve complete power; and the guidance by the guide and the one being guided; and misguidance in contrast to that by the misleader and the misguided; and in that are secrets that thoughts cannot encompass; and the Noble Qur'an; which encompasses all the signs; while being a truth that is established; not magic and illusion; rather it is a lasting sign throughout time; its matter is continuous; its recitation and mention are everlasting; the towering mountains may perish while it remains; and the heavens and the earth may vanish while they are new; when the army of the wicked assembles, every sign from it says: Is there anyone to challenge? And if an enemy attempts to confront it with weakness, it cries out for the permanence of its strength: I am ready; so no one can stand against it; nor can anyone hover around its protection; nor can anyone dare to plunge into its sea.

And when this verse is sufficient for its owner; and for the one who succeeds in accepting it, it is impressive and pleasing; it is good to follow it with His saying: "Do not extend your eyes to what We have given enjoyment to pairs of them"; [Al-Hijr: 88] And when their disbelief after its clarification is merely obstinacy; He (the Exalted) said: "And do not grieve for them"; [Al-Hijr: 88] And when the rich might think that the goodness of the pride of wealth is enough; He followed it with His saying: "And lower your wing to the believers"; [Al-Hijr: 88] And when it might be thought that reciting it is sufficient without supplication; especially for the one who turns away; He negated that with His saying: "And say, I am the clear warner"; urging to strive in warning; and affirming for the believers; and compelling the obstinate; and attracting the one whom Allah intends to make happy from the disbelievers; informing that the hearts of the believers are in the hand of Allah - glorified and exalted is He -; so there is no trust with that for one who approaches; nor safety from one who turns away.

And when this was completed in this solid structure; and the strong, tight connection; the thought turned to the state of those whom he warns; and the disbelievers of Quraysh - in their division of the saying in the Qur'an; and their sharing of the paths of Mecca to spread that slander; repelling those who wanted to believe - they resembled the ones who divided over Saleh - blessings and peace be upon him -; He (the Exalted) said: "As"; meaning: We gave those dividers Our signs; and they were turning away from them; just as We sent down Our signs upon the dividers; meaning: those who divided with great desire and effort in that; those who made the Qur'an into pieces; meaning: having parts; meaning: separate parts; like the parts of the camel when it is cut; the plural of "‘idha"; like "‘idda"; and its origin is "‘idwah"; "So by your Lord, We will surely question them all"; [Al-Hijr: 92] meaning: no one among them will be exempt from us; "About what they used to do, so declare"; meaning: because of Our command to you to warn; and informing you that We will question each one about what they did; "With what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists."
