And when what was given to him, and what will be given to him, is the greatest that any created being has been given, his saying is connected to it: "Do not extend your eyes"; meaning: an immense extension, with longing and persistent desire. He said (the Most High): ﴿And lower﴾; meaning: be humble; ﴿your wing to the believers﴾; meaning: those who are steadfast in this description; and be patient with them; and be content with them; for indeed, Allah will place blessings in them; and He will support you; and He will honor your religion through them; and He will not make you in need of others; so whoever desires his own misery, do not turn to them; and this is a metaphor for softness; and its origin is that the bird, when it gathers the chick to itself, spreads its wing; then it folds it around it. This was said by Abu Hayyan; and in the tenth part of the Thaqafiyyat; from Abu Hurairah - may Allah be pleased with him - "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah - blessings and peace be upon him - said: 'The believer is gentle; until you think he is foolish from his gentleness.'"
