Commentary
And when the obstinate one might say: What is it that He creates them then destroys them? And He knows when He created them that they would deny? And this verse is turning - along with what is in it of the mention of the earth - to that which follows it, the mention of the two horizons; as evidence for the Hour. He said - in this manner -: "And We did not create"; meaning: in light of Our greatness; "the heavens"; meaning: in light of what they have of height and vastness; "and the earth"; in light of what is in it of benefits; and wonders; "and what is between them"; of these deniers; and their punishment; and of the waters; and the winds; and the clouds - from which the plants are caused -; and other than that; "except with truth"; meaning: a creation intertwined with truth; so that one who Allah has guided may reflect upon it; and he knows the Hereafter by this first creation; or because of the truth of establishing the constants of matters; and denying their shakiness; so that Our greatness may appear by the justice of the oppressed against the oppressor; and the reward of the obedient; and the punishment of the disobedient on the Day of Judgment; and other than that from the wisdoms; as He, the Exalted, said: "And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth to recompense those who did evil for what they earned and to recompense those who did good with the best" [An-Najm: 31]; so whoever We gave respite in this world, We will take from him the right after the Day of Resurrection; so there must be the doing of that; "and indeed, the Hour is coming"; for the establishment of truth; there is no doubt in its coming for the judgment of His knowledge - glorified is He - so all of that will appear in it; and it may be that the decree is: "So what has availed them what they used to earn; and We did not do that except by the command of Our saying 'Be' and it is the truth"; "And We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them except with truth"; meaning: by the command; "Indeed, to Him belongs creation and command"; meaning that there is no difficulty upon Us in anything of that; and We will annihilate that with truth; if We will the establishment of the Hour; and indeed, the Hour is coming; because We have promised that; and there is nothing between you and its occurrence except that We will it; so it will be; as was other than it from what We willed; "So overlook with gracious forgiveness"; meaning: turn away - because of the realization of taking revenge for yourself - the beautiful turning away; with forbearance; and broad-mindedness; in the like of their saying: "O you upon whom the Reminder has been sent down, indeed you are insane" [Al-Hijr: 6]; for there must be taking from them the right for you; and if you had no support except on that day, it would be sufficient.
