Commentary
And when he mentioned what he mentioned of their matters; and their great wickedness; and they had been finished with their affair; and it was decreed for their extermination; everyone who knows that was certain that they had no intellect; so He followed - glorified and exalted is He - that which indicates it by His saying: ﴿By your life﴾; meaning: and by your life; O noble of character; and He affirmed that the situation was a judgment at that time, distancing their rejection; and to establish that this was pure misguidance from them; and pure obstinacy; so He said: ﴿Indeed, they are in their drunkenness﴾; meaning: in their ignorance; ﴿wandering﴾; meaning: they are confused; and they do not see the path of guidance; and for that reason, they do not accept the words of the sincere advisor; and if the addressee was Lot - peace be upon him - the pronoun of the third person refers to his people; and if the addressee was our Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - which is the apparent case - the pronoun refers to his people; and the estimation is that they are in a confusion far from the traditions in their request to bring the angels, just as the people of Lot - peace be upon him - intended to indulge in immorality with those who were enabled to bring about their destruction; so there is a great difference between the two intentions! And how far apart are the two actions! So the meaning is that what they accused you of - at the beginning of the Surah - was with them; not with you; because whoever seeks to bring the angels - even if his state is like that of the people of Lot - peace be upon him - upon their arrival - is the insane one; and "the life"; with the opening: the lifespan; with the damm; and it is the duration of the existence of a thing alive; but it is only said in the oath with the opening; due to its lightness; with the abundance of the occurrence of the oath; and for that reason, they omitted what is estimated as: my oath; and the drunkenness: the overwhelming of heedlessness for the soul.
