Commentary

So when what occurred between him and the messengers was completed; presenting what he clarified; he followed it with the explanation about the state of his people; indicating that if the angels were in the attributes of humans, the disbelievers would not recognize them; and if they were in their attributes; or by showing something of their miracles; their powers would not withstand it; so there is no benefit for them in revealing themselves to them in any of the states; thus their asking for them to come is a great ignorance; so He, the Exalted, said: ﴿And the people of the city came﴾; meaning: the one in which this matter was - they said: and it is Sodom - desiring to commit the abomination with the guests; ﴿They were rejoicing﴾; meaning: joy appeared on their faces; for they find it for themselves as one who is very eager in seeking it.
