Commentary
﴿Except for his wife﴾; when they excluded her from being saved; her matter was such that she could be punished; and that Allah (glorified and exalted is He) could save her because of others; the soul longed to know what Allah had decreed regarding that; it was said - attributing the action to themselves; due to their special connection with the Decreer - glorified is He -: ﴿We have decreed﴾; and since the act of decree includes knowledge; it was linked to His saying: ﴿Indeed, she﴾; meaning: his wife; and it was emphasized for the sake of what is referred to here regarding the great longing of the Friend - blessings and peace be upon him - to know their matter; and the intensity of his question regarding the salvation of Lot - blessings and peace be upon him - and all of his family - as it has been explicitly stated in "Hud"; to prevent him from asking about her salvation; unlike what is in "An-Naml"; for its context is devoid of that; ﴿Surely, she will be among the doomed﴾; meaning: the remaining ones; those who will not be saved with Lot - blessings and peace be upon him -; rather, she will be in destruction; and the lesson; and "the family"; Al-Rummani said: the people who return to his authority; and for this it is said: "the people of the town"; and it is not said: "the family of the town"; and the decree is: "the thing is made according to the measure of another; so that equality and distinction may appear"; and "the doomed" is the one remaining among those who perish.
