Commentary

And when He mentioned - glorified and exalted is He - the creation of man, He followed it with the mention of what He created before him from the jinn. He said: ﴿and the jinn﴾; meaning: that which is for the jinn like Adam - peace be upon him - is for mankind. It was said: it is Iblis. ﴿We created him﴾; and He expressed the shortening of the time prior to his creation and his proximity by affirming the preposition. He said: ﴿before﴾; meaning: before the creation of man. ﴿from scorching fire﴾; meaning: the intense heat. It was said: it is a fire that has no smoke; from it come the lightning bolts; and it is between the sky and the veil. When Allah - glorified and exalted is He - wills, it pierces the veil and directs to what it has been commanded. The sound that people hear is the piercing of that veil. Al-Razi said in 'Al-Lawa'ih': it is a subtle fire that has reached boiling in the horizon of the air. And it is in addition to the fire that Allah - glorified and exalted is He - has made a means of sustenance like the solid to water and the stone to dust. This is concluded. And Abdullah said: this scorching fire is a part of seventy parts of the scorching fire from which Allah created the jinn; and it is taken from its entry with its subtlety into the pores of the body; and from it is the lethal poison. This is concluded.
