Commentary
So when it was established by this, the perfection of His power; and the effects of power cannot be firmly established except by knowledge; He, the Most High, said: "And certainly We have knowledge"; meaning: with what We have of the encompassing miraculous knowledge; "of those who advance among you"; they are those whose death We have decreed first; so in their death, it is as if they are hastening to advance towards it; even if he - and all of his family - is striving with treatment to delay it; "And certainly We have knowledge"; with Our greatness; "of those who are delayed"; meaning: those whose lifespans We extend; so We delay their death until they are as if they are racing towards that; even if they treat death with drinking poison; and other than that; or it is treated for them by others by striking them with the sword; or otherwise; it is certainly known by that that the doer is one who has a choice; and likewise every one who advances and every one who is delayed; in a description of attributes other than death; and the meaning in the first: We do not cause anyone to die before his appointed time; so do not hasten Us with the threat; and prepare yourselves to defend it if you are men; for it must come; because the saying cannot be changed with Me.
