﴿Except for one who steals a hearing﴾; from them; for we did not intend the complete preservation of it; ﴿So he follows it﴾; meaning: he follows it as one who is urging himself; driving it; ﴿A shooting star﴾; and it is a column of light; extending with the intensity of its brightness; like fire; ﴿Clear﴾; it is seen by one who has the ability to see when he is struck by it; Al-Bukhari narrated; in the tafsir; from Abu Huraira - may Allah be pleased with him - that the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - said: "When the matter is decreed in the heavens; the angels strike their wings in submission to His saying; as if it were a chain on a smooth stone; it penetrates them; and when their hearts are calmed, they say: What did your Lord say? They say to the one who said: The truth; and He is the Most High, the Most Great; so the hearers of the heavens hear it; and the hearers of the heavens; like this one above another - and Sufyan described with his hand; and he spread between his right fingers; placing some above others - so perhaps the shooting star reaches the listener before he throws it to his companion; and it burns him; and perhaps it does not reach him until he throws it to the one below him; until it is thrown to the earth - and perhaps Sufyan said: until it reaches the earth -; so it is thrown at the mouth of the sorcerer; and he lies with it a hundred lies; and he is truthful; and they say: Did he not inform us on such and such day it would be such and such; so we found it to be true? For the word that was heard from the heavens."

The commentators - may Allah be pleased with them - said: The devils were not prevented from the heavens; so they would throw what they heard from them to the soothsayers; but when Jesus - peace be upon him - was born, they were prevented from three heavens; and when Muhammad - blessings and peace be upon him - was born, they were prevented from all the heavens; thus I saw "born"; and perhaps it is "sent"; for it is in the authentic narration that what prevented them was the descent of the Qur'an.
