Commentary
﴿And what comes to them﴾; he expressed it in the present tense to depict the state; indicating what necessitates anger; for indeed, 'what' makes the present tense a state; and the past tense close to it; and he affirmed the negation; so he said: ﴿from a Messenger﴾; meaning: in any way it was; ﴿except they were with it﴾; meaning: inherently and naturally; ﴿mocking﴾; repeating that always; so it is as if they have advised one another with such; and this does not diminish our greatness at all; so do not be distressed by what they do to you; and 'mockery'; in essence: the seeking of ridicule; and what is meant by it here - and Allah knows best - is mockery; which is the display of what is intended to be a fault; while implying praise; like playing and jesting; and perhaps he expressed it with the 's' indicating the request; pointing to the fact that their desire for it does not cease; as is the case of the seeker of something; although they do not attain their intention regarding the people of Allah at all; for they do not act upon that except it appears far from what they want; due to the manifestation of what the party of Allah calls to; and its steadfastness; so they were like the seekers of what has not occurred; and indeed, people are quicker to what ignorance necessitates of mockery and the like than to what knowledge necessitates of taking caution; and considering the consequences; for in that is hastening to comfort; and pleasure; and relieving the burden by obligating oneself to transition from one state to another - as said by Al-Rummani.
