Commentary
And when it is the case that one who urges towards something and rewards for it, or [forbids] from it and punishes for its action, does so for a purpose [of his], it is made clear that Allah, glorified and exalted is He, is above being affected by harm or benefit. The harm and benefit of that are [specific to the servant]. So He, exalted is He, said, narrating from him: ﴿And Moses said﴾, intimidating them, teaching that the consequence of disbelief is specific to its owner: ﴿If you disbelieve﴾. And disbelief is the neglect of the right of the blessing by denying it or what takes its place in the heart. ﴿You and whoever is on the earth﴾. And He affirmed with His saying: 'all together.' So its harm is specifically upon you, not returning any of it to Allah. ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾, meaning the greatest King, ﴿is Free of need﴾, meaning in His essence and attributes from anyone. And the richness here is specific to what negates the occurrence of harm or deficiency, and specific to the fact that He is capable and nothing can overwhelm Him, knowledgeable and nothing is hidden from Him. And that is by His essence [not by anything] else. And whoever is not like that is not truly rich. ﴿Praiseworthy﴾, meaning deserving of praise due to what He has of great blessings and due to His attributes of perfection. And every created being praises Him for His essence, His actions, and all His sayings, whatever they may be, because His bringing them into existence is a testimony (p-386) to His praise, glorified is He.
He said in the fifth travel: And Allah, your Lord, has chosen you to be a beloved people for Him from all the peoples [that are on the face of the earth, and not because you are more than all the peoples]. The Lord has loved you and chosen you, but to affirm the oaths that He swore to your forefathers. Therefore, the Lord brought you out with a mighty hand and saved you from slavery, and rescued you from the hands of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, so that you may know that Allah, your Lord, is the God of truth, a God who is All-Guardian, preserving the blessing and the covenant for His allies who keep His command for a thousand generations. He rewards their good deeds in their lives and recompenses them with destruction and loss. Keep the traditions, the rulings, and the commandments that I command you today, and do them. Allah, the Lord, will preserve the covenant and the blessing that He swore to your forefathers, and He will love you and bless you and increase you, and He will bless your children and the fruits of your land and your goodness and your bread and your oil, and in your herds of cattle and your flocks of sheep. And you will be blessed among all the peoples, and there will not be among you a barren or sterile person, nor among your livestock. And Allah will turn away from you every pain, and all the plagues that Allah has sent down upon the people of Egypt - as you know - He will not send them [upon you] but will send them upon all your enemies. And you will eat all the good things of the peoples that Allah, your Lord, gives you, and your eyes will not pity them, nor will you worship their gods, for they are traps for you. And if you say in your hearts: Indeed, these peoples are more than us, how can we destroy them! Do not be afraid of them, but remember all that Allah, your Lord, has done with Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and all his companions, and the great calamities that you saw with your own eyes, and the signs and wonders and the mighty hand and the great arm, and how Allah, your Lord, brought you out! Thus Allah, your Lord, will do with all the peoples that you fear.
And Allah, your Lord, will impose upon them afflictions until He destroys them. And those who remain and hide from you, do not fear them, for Allah, your Lord, is among you. The Great God, the One to be feared, will destroy these nations before you gradually, because you are not strong enough [to destroy them] quickly, lest the beasts increase. But Allah, your Lord, will push them towards you, and you will strike them with a severe blow until you destroy them. And He will deliver their kings into your hands, and you will eliminate their names from beneath the heavens. No one will be able to stand before you until you destroy them and burn their carved idols with fire. And do not desire the silver and gold that is upon them and take it from them, lest you become defiled by it, for it is rejected by Allah, your Lord. So do not bring impurity into your homes, lest you become exiled like it. But reject it, defile it, and turn it into worthless refuse, for it is forbidden. Then [he said]: Look! I am reciting to you a supplication and a curse. As for the supplication, you will turn to it if you keep the commandments of [Allah] your Lord. And as for the curse, it will reach you if you do not listen to the commandments of Allah, your Lord, and you deviate from the path He has commanded you today - and much like this has passed from the Torah. There is no doubt that this encouragement and warning and reminder for caution, just as it was for the Children of Israel, is for everyone who hears it among those who are accountable.
