Commentary
And when this surah encompassed what struck your hearing from these admonitions, parables, and wisdoms that rendered the eloquent speechless, and silenced the articulate, and astonished the minds, He translated it, glorified and exalted is He, with what is suitable as a title for all of the Qur'an, saying: ﴿This﴾ meaning the book that brings people out of darkness into light ﴿is a message﴾ meaning sufficient, to the utmost degree of sufficiency in conveying ﴿to the people﴾ so that they may reach Allah through the virtues they adorn themselves with in following His straight path. For the root of 'reached' in any arrangement revolves around reaching, sometimes requiring strength and sometimes fatigue arising from weakness: (p-442) 'the place reached' means 'he arrived at it'; and 'the man reached' - like 'he strived'; and 'the eloquent' means the articulate who conveys with his expression the essence of his inner thoughts; and 'message' - like 'cloud' - means sufficiency, because it leads to the intended goal; and 'he exerted himself' means he strived and did not fall short; and 'the ailment reached him' means it intensified.
And 'the thick garden' means the dense garden, and from the tribes: the noble and resistant; and 'the most prevalent' means the lion.
And 'he was exhausted' means he was fatigued due to his striving in reaching, and 'the flesh between the teeth' means the flesh between the molars; and 'the corrupt speech' - returns to fatigue, and likewise the weak fool, and the arrow that did not hit its target is like 'the luhab' - with the 'dhamma'; and 'overcoming' means prolonged pursuit.
And the mule is one of the strongest animals and most effective for the purpose, and 'he reached' means he arrived and was exhausted, and the camels walked between the hunch and the neck.
And when the relation of the message, whose capacity is in reaching, includes good tidings, He coupled it with warning, establishing the effect, because the beneficial is the absolute warning, and everyone is qualified (p-443) to be a preacher with it, accepted, because whoever hears it is as if he has heard it from Allah due to its distinction with its miraculous nature from all speech. So He said: ﴿And let them be warned﴾ meaning from any warner who may establish the proof against them ﴿by it﴾ so that they may beware of Allah's punishment and abandon the vile actions.
And when He referred to all branches in action and abstention, along with His reference to the root of monotheism, for it is the first of the reachings, He stated it clearly due to its majesty in His saying: ﴿And let them know that He is﴾ meaning the deity ﴿One God﴾ so that their concern becomes one.
And when the indication to the religion, in its essence and branches, was completed, He alerted to the admonitions and examples by remembering what it has of signs and creations, and the punishment of those who opposed it from the nations. He indicated that the evidence of oneness and resurrection does not require much remembrance, because it is extremely clear, especially after the warning of the messengers. So He merged the letter of the verb form, and said: ﴿And let those of understanding remember﴾, meaning from them ﴿those of sound intellect﴾, that is, the pure and complete minds, so they may open the eyes of their insight and know that there is no reaching for them with heedlessness, so they must remain vigilant and not cease to be in the gardens of closeness. And they know - by what is ingrained in their natures and what has become of their habits - that the least of their rulers does not accept to leave his subjects in chaos, where justice is not upheld among them and no one is rewarded for what they have earned. This would be a detachment from the rank of rulership which is his specialty. So how can they claim this in the most just of judges? This verse has taken care of its validity [with all the knowledge of the Shari'ah, in its roots and branches, and it has known the truth in its ends and beginnings, in a general manner -] and the end of the chapter has corresponded with its beginning, for this is the very essence of the transition from darkness to light through this book that carries every truth - and Allah, glorified and exalted is He, is the one who grants success to the truth and good return.
