Commentary
Then he clarified their clothing by saying: ﴿Their garments﴾ meaning their long shirts made of tar, which is what camels enjoy. It is such that fire quickly ignites in it. It is black in color and has a foul smell.
And since this clothing, with its foulness and horribleness, is highly reactive to fire, he indicated that it will be unleashed upon them. He said: ﴿And it will cover﴾. And since the face is the most honorable part of a living being, its humiliation is a great humiliation for its owner. He mentioned it and brought it forward to hasten the understanding of the humiliation by saying: ﴿Their faces will be scorched by the fire﴾ meaning it will rise upon them with its burning. It is known that the covering of it necessitates its blazing in what has been smeared with tar, primarily.
