Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, mentioned the messengers with what He mentioned, the listener expected a detail of something from their news. So He began by mentioning from His Book, the greatest Book after the Qur'an, guidance for the people, a proof that He does what He wills of misguidance and guidance. This was a consolation for the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him and his family, and a means of strengthening and patience against the harm of his people, and guidance to what is good in their conversations. He said, beginning with a word of expectation: ﴿And certainly We sent﴾, meaning with Our greatness, ﴿Moses with Our signs﴾, meaning the clear signs; then He explained the sending by saying: ﴿To bring your people out﴾, meaning those who have strength to overcome matters ﴿from darkness﴾, meaning types of ignorance, ﴿to light﴾ with those signs. ﴿And remind them﴾, meaning a great reminder, ﴿of the days of Allah﴾, meaning those which belong to Him, the Majestic and the Honorable, from the events in the previous nations and other than that, from the favors to His allies and the trials for His enemies, as We sent you for that. ﴿Indeed, in that﴾, meaning that great reminder, ﴿are signs﴾ of the oneness of Allah and His greatness ﴿for every patient﴾, meaning one who is proficient in patience with Allah's trials. He said in the 'Awarif: And Abu al-Hasan ibn Salim said: They are three: the one who is patient, the one who endures, and the one who is very patient. The one who is patient is the one who has patience for Allah, sometimes he is patient and sometimes he is distressed. The one who endures is the one who is patient for Allah and does not become distressed, but he may expect from him a complaint, and he may be enabled by distress. As for the very patient, that is the one whom Allah has made patient for Allah and for Allah and with Allah. This one, if all calamities befall him, does not become distressed nor does he change in terms of obligation and reality, not in terms of appearance and creation. His indication in this is the manifestation of the ruling of knowledge in it along with the manifestation of the attribute of nature.
﴿Grateful﴾, meaning greatly thankful for His blessings. For indeed, His days with His allies are not devoid of blessing or punishment. And in the form of exaggeration, there is an indication that His habit, glorified and exalted is He, has been that He only supports His allies after a long trial with great calamity, so that the truthful may be distinguished from the liar. ﴿Until the messenger and those who believed with him say: When will the help of Allah come?﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 214] ﴿Until when the messengers despair﴾ [Yusuf: 110] ﴿Alif Lam Meem﴾ [Al-Ankabut: 1] ﴿Do the people think that they will be left﴾ [Al-Ankabut: 2]. And that is because there is nothing more difficult for souls than to part from the familiar, especially if it is a religion, and especially if it is something that the ancestors have adhered to. So no one calls to the religion except one who has reached the peak in patience.
