Commentary

And when man, even if he strives with all his effort, is in a state of incapacity that necessitates deficiency and is in need of concealment, he said, indicating that: "Our Lord" meaning O Owner of our affairs, the One who manages for us, "forgive me". Then he included with it the closest people to him and the most deserving of his gratitude, saying: "and for my parents". And his seeking forgiveness for them was before he knew that his father had died as a disbeliever. And he knew from the context that if he was alone, he would add to his pronoun, and if what preceded was suitable for gathering with him, it would be a gathering if what followed was independent. Then everyone who follows him in religion from his descendants and others, he said: "and for the believers" meaning those deeply rooted in the description, "on the Day when" meaning it appears and is realized on the highest of faces, "the reckoning."
