Commentary

And when the command regarding the saying to the disbeliever in blessings and the one who is grateful for them was fulfilled, and it became clear that He is the Creator of all existents and their Lord, it is not correct at all for anything among them to be a partner. He commanded him, blessings and peace be upon him and his family, to remind them of the days of Allah at their father Ibrahim, peace be upon him, as a sign of their changing the blessing into injustice from them and disbelief, in a manner indicating resurrection, pointing to the necessity of their disavowal from the idols, where their condition in it was imitation of their fathers, and he (p-424) is their greatest father. And to what He legislated for them of establishing prayer and thanking Him for His blessings through spending and other means. He said, reproaching them - with the contradiction to the clear intellect and the decisive transmission of their disobedience to their greatest father, in reference to ﴿Say to My servants who have believed﴾ [Ibrahim: 31] or to ﴿And when Moses said to his people﴾ [Ibrahim: 6] ﴿And when﴾ meaning remember for them, reminding them of the days of Allah, the account of Ibrahim when ﴿He said, My Lord﴾ meaning O You who are gracious to me by answering my supplication in making the desolation in which my son was placed a great city.

And when the context was for the expulsion of the messengers from their places, and that was understood to mean that the place from which the expulsion occurs is a city in which they reside, He followed it, glorified is He, by indicating that those who are exposed have changed the blessing of Allah - by what He made them dwell in of security after making it a city for them - by what they have caused in it of fear for its best people, and of warning for those whom He has bestowed upon them with all that is in it of goodness. It was most appropriate to define it, so He said: ﴿Make this city﴾ [that is] from which they want to expel the messenger ﴿secure﴾ meaning one of security with the safety of its people. And it seems that this supplication came from him after the people settled in Mecca and it became a city, and that which is in Al-Baqarah was where he placed his son with his mother while she was empty of any inhabitant. So he prayed that Allah would make it a city, and that He would make it afterwards described (p-425) with security, which is the tranquility of the soul from the removal of harm.

And when he prayed for security from the corruption of wealth and bodies, he followed it with a prayer for security from the corruption of religions, so he said: ﴿And keep me﴾ meaning turn me away ﴿and my sons﴾ meaning my offspring, and he omitted the daughters indicating independence, for they are always followers. ﴿From worshipping﴾ meaning a continuous worship that would necessitate the Fire ﴿idols﴾ meaning make us in a side other than the side of their worship, and the idol is that which is carved in the form of a human being, and whatever was carved in a form other than that of a human being is a statue - this was said by Al-Tabari from Mujahid.
