Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, informed that He is the sole doer, He followed it with the evidence against those who changed the good word of monotheism with polytheism, and He shook them and uprooted their saying. He said: "Did you not see?" and indicated their distance from his station, blessings and peace be upon him and his family, by His saying: "to those who changed." And changing is making something take the place of another. "The bounty of Allah" means the one that encompasses the attributes of perfection that He bestowed upon them from the word of monotheism, and what He inherited them from the religion of their father, Isma'il, may peace be upon him, and from all worldly blessings, such as the security of the land and the facilitation of sustenance, and others, by making them in place of gratitude for it "disbelief," while they claim that they are the most grateful of people for the kindness, and the highest among them in fulfilling their promises, and the furthest from treachery. "And they made their people" by that "the abode of destruction," meaning ruin, along with their claim that they are the best of people regarding the neighbor, let alone their family. Al-Bukhari narrated in the tafsir that they are the disbelievers of the people of Mecca. And destruction is the excessive ruin, and making something in place means placing something in a position. If it is a substance, it is the placement of adjacency. And if it is an attribute, it is the placement of interaction.
