Commentary

And when he mentioned its state, he mentioned its fruit and said: ﴿It brings forth its fruit﴾ meaning its fruit due to the goodness of its land and the continuity of its irrigation ﴿at all times﴾ in the best manner of giving, because its height prevents it from the foulness of [the earth] and the filth of buildings. Thus, its fruit was pure from the impurities of dirt.

And when a thing cannot be complete except by the perfection of its nurturer, he said: ﴿By the permission of its Lord﴾ so it is in a state where no rational person would allow themselves to cause its corruption. And whoever strives for that is prevented by the people of reason, even if they were to reach the point of sacrificing their souls. Al-Bukhari narrated in the tafsir and elsewhere from Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, who said: "We were with the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and he said: 'Tell me about a tree that is like the Muslim man, whose leaves do not fall, and it brings forth its fruit at all times.' Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: 'It occurred to me that it was the date palm, and I saw Abu Bakr and Umar not speaking, so I disliked to speak. When they did not say anything, the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'It is the date palm.' When we stood up, I said to Umar: 'O my father! By Allah, it had occurred to me that it was the date palm.' He said: 'What prevented you from speaking?' I said: 'I did not see you speaking, so I disliked to speak.' Umar said: 'For it to be few is more beloved to me than this and that.'

Then He, glorified and exalted is He, alerted to the greatness of this parable so that it may be accepted for contemplation to understand the intended meaning from it and to be obliged by it. He said: ﴿And Allah sets forth﴾ meaning He who has complete encompassing knowledge ﴿the examples for the people﴾ meaning those who need that due to the confusion of their opinions. For in setting forth examples, there is an increase in understanding and a depiction of meanings. Because the meanings, when their appropriate instances from the tangible are mentioned, become engraved in the senses, imagination, and perception, and they are envisioned, thus leaving these [faculties] no dispute in them. Therefore, complete understanding is achieved and access to the desired is attained ﴿that perhaps they may remember﴾ meaning so that their state may be like that of one who is hoped to reach the ultimate remembrance - as indicated by the clarity. This is like the words of the saints, for their good word is the word of monotheism, which there is no word better than it, and it is the root of all happiness firmly established in their hearts, deeply rooted in every vein of theirs, necessitating its rooting that its branches, which are the religious deeds from the actions of the hearts and limbs, are produced. Thus, whenever it is shaken, the shaker gathers its fruits which have no end, knowing that they are from the opening of his Lord, and there is no creation of his in it whatsoever. Rather, for Him, glorified is He, is the favor upon him in all of that. And just as the tree cannot be complete except with a deep root, a standing trunk, and high branches, so too faith cannot be complete except with the knowledge of the heart, the saying of the tongue, and the actions of the limbs.
