And when this dialogue concluded, every fair-minded person knew what the messengers had regarding forbearance, knowledge, and wisdom. They also knew what their opponents had regarding misguidance, ignorance, and obstinacy. And in the speech, there was something that perhaps hinted at its conclusion. The Exalted began another dialogue, adding it to what had passed, saying: ﴿And those who disbelieved said to their messengers﴾, belittling those who limited their refuge to Him. They confirmed their feeling of denying the one who saw Allah defending His allies against their words: 'By the One in whose name we swear! One of two things will certainly happen: ﴿We will surely expel you from our land﴾, meaning the one over which we currently have dominance, ﴿or you will surely return to our religion﴾ by ceasing to oppose us as you did when you claimed to be messengers. Thus, their calling for silence about them is like the general name applied to the part according to their claim, as in the saying: ﴿They put their fingers in their ears﴾ [Nuh: 7]. This is a metaphorical expression. They remained patient regarding that as they informed, relying on their Lord, and they continued to advise them by calling them to Allah. ﴿So He revealed to them﴾, meaning He spoke to them in secret due to the threats of their nations against them, specifically to them with that: 'Their Lord', the One who is gracious to them, whom they relied upon, to soothe their hearts and comfort their souls. And He emphasized, for those who observe the multitude of disbelievers and their strength, the need to pause regarding the content of the news, especially if he is a disbeliever, saying: ﴿We will surely destroy﴾, by virtue of our greatness necessitating the enforcement of the matter; and destruction is the removal of something to a place where it cannot be perceived. ﴿The wrongdoers﴾, meaning those deeply entrenched in wrongdoing. And perhaps we have repented for some of what we have informed about, that it is disbelief, which is [for] one who is not deeply entrenched in his disbelief, which is the darkest of wrongs.
